The Alliance for Peace and Justice (APJ) Condemns Cameroun Government’s Failure to Protect Ambazonian Refugees in the Central Region of Cameroun
London and Buea — June 10, 2025: The Alliance for Peace and Justice (APJ) in the former British Southern Cameroons, expresses deep concern about the Government of Cameroun’s failure to protect vulnerable Ambazonian refugees who have sought safety in and around the vicinity of Ndikinemeki in the Central Region of Cameroun. In recent weeks, dozens of homes, businesses, and farms belonging to these displaced individuals have been systematically destroyed, leaving hundreds without shelter, livelihoods, or security.
Reports gathered by APJ from local sources and field investigations reveal a troubling pattern of targeted attacks, harassment, and evictions against Ambazonian refugees — many of whom fled violence in the former British Southern Cameroons (North West and South West Regions) amid the ongoing liberation war that has ravished the territory for almost nine years. Despite the government’s constitutional and international obligations to safeguard the rights of all citizens and asylum seekers, the response has been marked by silence, and neglect.
“What we are witnessing goes beyond humanitarian neglect – it represents a profound violation of both moral obligations and international legal standards. The systematic nature of these actions suggests, at minimum, state acquiescence to ethnic targeting,” stated Prof. Januarius Asongu, Chair of APJ. “Ambazonian refugees, already traumatized by years of displacement and conflict, are now being pushed further into the margins of society by a state that has not only ignored their plight but may be enabling their continued victimization.”
APJ calls on:
• The Government of Cameroun to immediately investigate the destruction of properties and bring perpetrators to justice.
• The Ministry of Territorial Administration to ensure the protection and resettlement of displaced “Anglophones” in the Central Region.
• The international community, including the United Nations and African Union, to engage in diplomatic dialogue to ensure that the Camerounian government fulfills its responsibilities under international humanitarian law.
• Civil society organizations and local leaders to stand in solidarity with affected communities and demand accountability.
This is a critical moment for the government to demonstrate that the rule of law applies equally to all its citizens, regardless of language, region, or political background. Failing to act will only deepen the divisions and prolong the suffering of those already hardest hit by conflict and neglect.
