ICO Supporting APJ’s Diplomatic and Peace-Building Efforts

Buea | London | New York: Thursday, December 5, 2024 – The Alliance for Peace & Justice (APJ) in the Former British Southern Cameroons today announced that the International Communities Organisation (ICO) is supporting its efforts towards a negotiated settlement with the Cameroon government aimed at putting an end to the pro-independence war, securing autonomy, and getting a referendum on the future of the Former British Southern Cameroons. Apart from training APJ members on conflict negotiation, ICO has also met senior United Nations (UN) officials as well as 13 countries to drum up support for the APJ peace initiative. “It’s exactly one week since we delivered the historic speech at the 17th Session of the UN Forum on Minority Issues calling for the international community to support our efforts towards peace and justice for the Former British Southern Cameroons, an achievement which was facilitated by ICO,” said Professor Januarius Asongu, chair of the APJ Steering Committee. “ICO has drawn the world’s attention to our conflict and pushed for a negotiated settlement by both parties.” Read More from the document bellow

APJ CREATES COMMITTEES FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PEACE PLAN PAPER

Individual and Organizational Stakeholders Invited to Participate in the PPP Implementation Buea | London: Wednesday, December 4, 2024 – The Alliance for Peace & Justice (APJ) in the Former British Southern Cameroons today announced that it has created nine Committees to work on the implementation of the Peace Plan Paper (PPP), which the organization adopted on November 17, 2024. Each Committee will be chaired by a member of APJ Steering Committee, but members would be drawn from experts and volunteers from within the Former British Southern Cameroons community and beyond. There are nine APJ Committees, each of which has been tasked with the implementation of specific areas of the proposed peace plan. The Committees are:1. Independence Referendum2. Legislative and Judicial Reforms3. Policing and Justice System Improvement4. Reconstruction of Burned Villages, Schools, and Health Facilities5. Reintegration of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)6. Economic Development7. Citizenship and Cultural Preservation8. Cessation of Hostilities and Rehabilitation of Ex-Combatants9. Establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission “Apart from identifying the nine Committees, APJ is also engaging with individual and organizational stakeholders to help implement the PPP,” said Professor Januarius Asongu, chair of the APJ Steering Committee. “APJ seeks to represent all viewpoints within the Former British Southern Cameroons. Effective stakeholder engagement is essential to securing broad support for the peace plan and obtaining expert input across its various implementation areas. NGOs, universities, professional groups, cultural and development organizations, community groups, alumni associations, and women’s organizations are critical partners in this process. ALLIANCE FOR PEACE & JUSTICE TO PRESENT SOUTHERN CAMEROONS’ CASE AT UN FORUM

Buea | London | Geneva: Sunday, November 24, 2024 – The Alliance for Peace & Justice (APJ) in the Former British Southern Cameroons today announced that it would be making a presentation at the United Nations (UN) Forum on Minority Issues holding in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 27-29, 2024. The coveted spot at this UN Forum was secured for the APJ by the International Communities Organisation (ICO), which has been helping leaders of the Former British Southern Cameroons in presenting their case to the international community.
Speaking on behalf of the people of the Former British Southern Cameroons, will be Professor Januarius Asongu, who is chair of the APJ Steering Committee, and has been a longtime advocate of peace, justice, and self-determination for the peoples of the Former British Southern Cameroons.
“The Alliance for Peace & Justice in the Former British Southern Cameroons is dedicated to ending the war over the territory of the Former British Southern Cameroons through a win-win approach to conflict resolution,” said Prof. Asongu. “My speech will highlight the message of the APJ Peace Plan Paper, which calls for a UN-backed peace mission to ensure cessation of hostilities between the Cameroon armed forces and the pro-independence forces of the Former British Southern Cameroons as well as the need to organize a referendum on the future of our territory.”
